Congress Seeks to Ban Firearms Training, Competition

A recent bicameral measure introduced in Congress has raised concerns among staunch supporters of the Second Amendment, as it holds the potential to significantly impact various modern shooting sports activities. The “Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act,” as it has been named by its gun-grabbing co-sponsors, U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey (MA) and U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD), this bill, if enacted in its current form, could pose a threat to the fundamental rights of gun enthusiasts across the nation.

Introduced on the anniversary of J6, the bill aims to prohibit what it deems “paramilitary groups” through a combination of civil and criminal enforcement at the federal level. The broad and sweeping definition of “Unauthorized Private Paramilitary Activity” outlined in the 10-page bill has raised alarm bells among Second Amendment advocates. Activities such as publicly patrolling, drilling, or engaging in various shooting sports techniques are at risk of falling under this definition, potentially impacting training classes, service rifle/DCM competitions, and 3-Gun competitions.

The bills further characterize any semi-automatic firearm capable of using a “large capacity ammunition feeding device” (known to normal people as a “magazine”)with a capacity greater than 10 rounds as a “dangerous weapon,” a clear attempt at an “assault weapons ban” through the backdoor. This description could encompass a wide range of commonly used firearms by law-abiding citizens engaged in lawful activities.

The bill’s sponsors use bogeymen like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys as the impetus for its introduction. Make no mistake, however – the language used could encompass any group of three or more people under some form of command structure engaged in training for combat, combat support, law enforcement, or security services. This overly broad language raises the possibility of affecting innocent and lawful groups, including prepper organizations, gun clubs, volunteer search and rescue groups, and even local sheriff’s posses or auxiliary police units.

The bill’s exceptions, limited to historical military reenactment groups, some veterans’ organizations, ROTC groups, and the military/National Guard, leave significant gaps. Notably, an exception for the “unorganized militia” contradicts the bill’s overarching objectives, as it already includes every able-bodied man between 17 and 45 years old, who is not a member of the National Guard or Naval Militia.

Critics argue that the bill duplicates existing laws covering constitutional rights violations, government proceedings’ interruption, false imprisonment, and impersonation of a law enforcement officer, making its necessity questionable. Pro-gun advocacy groups, such as the Firearms Policy Coalition, suggest that the bill may be driven by an ulterior motive to restrict tactical training with firearms under the guise of fear-mongering descriptors.

This proposed legislation is yet another attempt to encroach upon the rights of law-abiding citizens and curtail their ability to engage in legitimate shooting sports and training activities. As the debate unfolds, supporters of the Second Amendment remain vigilant in defending their constitutional rights against such restrictive measures.

Biden’s Newest Attempt to Take Your Guns

The Biden administration finalized a new rule last week, touted by Attorney General Merrick Garland as a “historic step” in combating gun violence. This rule aims to increase background checks on gun sales by broadening the pool of people required to obtain a federal firearms license (FFL). The administration claims this will address the so-called “gun show loophole” and reduce illegal gun sales.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), there’s a “large and growing black market of guns being sold by people without a license.” They argue that this black market is fueling violence because these sellers are not conducting background checks. However, many see this new rule as yet another attempt to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.

Understanding the New Rule

To grasp the impact of this new rule, it’s crucial to understand the existing laws governing gun sales. Federal law mandates that all gun dealers conduct background checks via the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) before selling a firearm. Despite claims from the White House and mainstream media, there has never been a “gun show loophole.” Gun shows operate under the same legal framework as other venues: dealers must conduct background checks, while private sellers are not required to do so. The lack of concrete standards means law-abiding citizens are left in a legal gray area. The rule could easily be interpreted in a way that criminalizes ordinary gun owners who occasionally sell firearms.
