Once again, patriotic gun owners find themselves facing the misguided efforts of firearm prohibitionists attempting to undermine our constitutional rights. This time, they are targeting ammunition, attempting to use the same unconstitutional tactics as cracking down on ink and paper supplies to curtail First Amendment expression.

During the Obama-Biden administration, the ATF’s attempt to reclassify M855 rounds as “armor-piercing” met with failure and even led to the resignation of the ATF’s then-director. Undeterred, Gun Control, Inc. is recycling failed executive gun control schemes with a new attempt to ban so-called “military-grade” ammunition from public sale.

It’s essential to recognize that certain technologies have both military and civilian applications. Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri, operated by Olin Winchester, serves both markets, producing rifle cartridges for military and civilian use, including the popular 5.56×45 mm designation used in the M4 and AR-15.

This dual-market approach benefits taxpayers, U.S. forces, and law-abiding Americans exercising their Second Amendment rights. By maintaining machinery, infrastructure, staffing, and supply chain purchasing power for both markets, Lake City produces consistent, high-quality ammunition at affordable prices. It also enables the plant to meet military demands during times of high need, such as combat operations.

Importantly, ammunition sales from Lake City to the public are subject to the same laws and regulations governing any other source. The plant cannot sell restricted items, such as armor-piercing ammunition, on the private market. Moreover, surplus military equipment, including firearms, has been made available to the public for decades without significant issues or complaints.

Recent attempts to generate fear and outrage over Lake City’s ammunition sales are part of a coordinated effort by firearm prohibitionists. The narrative surrounding the alleged misuse of this ammunition, as reported by the New York Times, should be approached with skepticism. The identification of ammunition in crimes lacks the precision afforded by serialized firearms, and agenda-driven reporting raises questions about the reliability of the claims.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and other Democrat state attorneys general’s demand for an investigation into contracting and manufacturing practices reveals a clear agenda. Their call to prohibit the sale of military weapons and ammunition to civilians underlines the true purpose of the effort — to restrict law-abiding Americans’ access to essential ammunition for their legally owned firearms.

Such restrictions would not deter determined criminals but would significantly impede law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights and maintaining competency with their firearms. Lake City Ammunition’s role in supplying 30% of the commercial supply of 5.56×45 mm rounds in the U.S. emphasizes the potential impact on the availability and affordability of ammunition for America’s most popular rifle, the AR-15.

It is crucial for pro-Second Amendment advocates to stand firm against these attempts to curtail our rights, recognizing the coordinated effort to generate fear and undermine the fundamental principles enshrined in the Second Amendment.
