Firearm Safety Measures for Families at Home

Pistol isolated on white background and bullets

Having firearms in your home comes with significant responsibilities, especially when you have a family. Ensuring the safety of your loved ones and minimizing the risk of accidents should be a top priority. In this article, we’ll explore essential safety tips to help families with firearms in the house maintain a secure and harmonious living environment.

Secure Storage

The key to firearm safety at home is secure storage. Invest in a high-quality gun safe or lockbox that meets your needs and budget. Store your firearms unloaded, with ammunition kept separately. Ensure that only authorized individuals know the safe’s access code or key location.

Education and Training

Educate every family member about firearm safety, even those who may not handle firearms directly. Enroll in local firearm safety courses and encourage your family to participate. Understanding the basics of firearm safety fosters a culture of responsibility and respect.

Age-Appropriate Education

Teach children about firearms in an age-appropriate manner. Young children should be educated about the “stop, don’t touch, run away, and tell an adult” approach if they come across a firearm. Older children can be taught more advanced safety rules under adult supervision.

Open and honest communication is essential. Discuss the presence of firearms in the home with all family members. Ensure that everyone understands the potential dangers and the importance of adhering to safety rules at all times.

Always Treat Firearms as Loaded

Instill the mindset that every firearm is loaded, even if you believe it to be empty. Never assume a firearm is safe to handle. Always check the chamber and magazine before handling or storing it.

Keep Finger Off the Trigger

Teach proper handling techniques, emphasizing the importance of keeping the finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. This reduces the risk of accidental discharges.

Supervision and Access Control

When handling firearms, especially during training or practice sessions, ensure adult supervision at all times. Implement access control measures, so only authorized individuals can access firearms. Never allow horseplay or games involving firearms in the house. Make it clear that firearms are not toys and should be treated with respect and seriousness.

Use Gun Locks or Cable Locks

Utilize gun locks or cable locks when storing firearms in a gun safe to prevent unauthorized access. These simple devices add an extra layer of safety and are particularly useful when children or visitors are around.

Regular Maintenance and Inspection

Regularly inspect your firearms for any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. Proper maintenance ensures that your personal firearms function safely and reliably.

Safety should be the foundation of any household with firearms. By implementing these safety tips, you can create a secure environment for your family. Responsible firearm ownership involves education, communication, secure storage, and ongoing adherence to safety rules. Remember, safety is a collective responsibility, and fostering a culture of safety within your family will contribute to a safer and more harmonious living environment for everyone involved.

Gun Accessories: What You Need And What You Need To Avoid

modern black pistol and ammunition

Some gun accessories border on the indispensable… others are… well, stupid. Especially if you’re new to the world of guns or getting deeper into the hobby, you might have trouble knowing what’s a gem and what’s just total junk.

The bottom line is this: gun accessories are not cheap. So before you go dumping hundreds or thousands of dollars building the world’s most “tacticool” setup, you should take a little advice from someone who knows what’s what. The most expensive accessory in the world is the one that you don’t need or want. So save a few bucks that you can spend on high-quality gear you’re actually going to use.

The Most Unnecessary Firearms Accessories

We’re gonna lead with the dumb ones for a couple reasons.

First, if you only read half of this article, we want it to be the half that saves you money… and in the case at least of these, keep you out of prison.

  • Home Made Suppressors: Do. Not. Do. This. Not only do home made suppressors complete suck, in a worst-case scenario they’re dangerous and in a worst worst-case scenario they can land you in prison for violation of the National Firearms Act. Keep in mind, we’re not talking about kits that you make at home, we’re talking about things you MacGuyer together in your garage out of an empty 2-liter of Dr. Thunder and dental floss.
  • Auto Sears: This is another DO NOT GO HERE. Sure, the idea of having a fully automatic Glock 20 might sound like the most awesome thing in the world… until you realize that you are, once again, in violation of federal law and looking at hard time for an innocent little piece of plastic that you got on Amazon. You can’t make your semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic ones, period the end. No, it doesn’t matter that these are labeled as being “for AirSoft” weapons and no you are not the first person to think of this and yes you are absolutely risking a visit from our “friends” at the ATF for just buying one.
  • Novelty Bayonets: Novelties are, well… novelties. You can find attachments for everything from a chainsaw to a pistol in the bayonet position of your favorite rifle. That’s cute and all, but they’re kind of useless and might land you in legal hot water, even if they’re totally legal. Why? Because if you have to use a firearm in self-defense a gun grabbing DA is going to build his re-election campaign on the Zombie Slayer x-9000 chainsaw bayonet you kept fixed on the AR you legally used to defend yourself. Don’t give them any ammo to use against you in court.

The Most Essential Firearms Accessories

Ok… that was fun.

So, for that matter, are essential firearms accessories you actually have a need and a use for. They might not have the “hey bro, check out my chainsaw bayonet attachment” factor… but trust us, you’re going to enjoy them just as much, albeit maybe in a slightly quieter and more responsible way.

  • Lights: Lights are great for a couple reasons. First, you can’t shoot what you can’t see. The last thing you want to be doing when an intruder breaks into your house in the middle of the night is blindly firing at anything that moves. What’s more, a bright light in the eyes of an intruder can give you a tactical advantage in a fire fight.
  • Sights: Some people prefer iron sights, but for long-distance rifle shooting there’s simply no substitute for glass. What’s more, if we’re talking home defense, a laser sight is a great tool for dramatically increasing your chances to hit the bad guy exactly where you’re trying to. Even if you decide to stick with iron sights, you have options for upgrading this part of your favorite firearm.
  • Slings: Slings are a near essential accessory for long arms. The reason being that if you have to defend your family in the dead of night, a sling offers your the opportunity to have both your hands free without relinquishing your firearm. What’s more, if you have to get into hand-to-hand combat with the enemy, a sling is going to make it much harder for the bad guy to take your weapon away from you and potentially turn it on you and your family.
  • Foregrips: This is another long arm accessory you might wish to consider. Foregrips can give you greater stability on long arms, which leads to increased accuracy. This is absolutely essential when shooting long range, but depending on how “long” the range is we’re talking about, you might want to consider getting a bipod for even greater accuracy.

When it comes to accessories, spending money on quality is definitely a good investment. However, you don’t want to waste your money on inferior gear, useless gear or illegal or legally dubious gear.

Still, if you’re just starting out, this is a great list to help you get started figuring out where to begin building out your weapon.

Protecting Your Precious Ones: Firearms Safety For Kids

Gun instructor teaching young kid how to shoot from firearm

Firearms aren’t just for adults. Many of us have fond memories of shooting and hunting with our parents when we were “knee high to a chicken” as the saying goes. In fact, there is nothing inherently dangerous about even young children shooting firearms.

However, there are extra precautions that need to be taken when children of any age are involved in shooting. Not only do you want to stay on the right side of the law, you also don’t want to be witness to a tragedy. There is nothing more precious in your life than your children. So here are some helpful hints to help you to enjoy your favorite pastime with them while keeping them safe.

Guns Are NOT Toys

Before taking any concrete action, it’s important to create a culture of safety in your home. That starts with impressing upon your children that guns are not toys. They should not be used without adult supervision. If they ever happen upon an unsecured firearm, they shouldn’t pick it up – they should find an adult. If one of their friends pulls out a weapon without adult supervision, it’s time to leave.

Secure Your Own Weapons

Gun in Safe

No matter how much you impress upon your child that guns aren’t toys, kids are naturally curious. This is why it’s important to secure your weapons as a second line of defense against any potentially tragic mishaps in your home.

As a rule, weapons should be locked and unloaded when not in use. With that said, we understand the need to have easy access to a ready weapon to defend your family in the event that you’re woken to the sound of breaking glass as an uninvited guest makes his arrival at your home.

Fortunately, thumbprint safes are coming down in price, making it easy to balance easy access to weapons with the need to keep the little ones safe.

Ammunition should not be stored near the firearm and, if possible, should be locked down. Even if you’re keeping a bedside weapon for intruders, there’s no reason to keep spare ammunition next to the weapon. You can even split the two up, such as keeping the weapon in your nightstand while keeping the magazine under your mattress in somewhere easily accessible.

Proper Firearms Training

One of the best ways to ensure that your kids respect the awesome power of a firearm is to share your hobby with them. No amount of talking about this is going to make quite the impression on your kids that actually taking them shooting will.

So if your kids are interested in weapons, you can impress upon them the importance of proper firearms handling by taking them shooting or enrolling them in a class for kids.

These tend to be local, so we can’t recommend anything that’s going to be specifically helpful for you. But, chances are good that there’s something right in your backyard to teach kids the fundamentals of the proper use of firearms and this goes doubly so for the parts of the country that have a strong hunting and Second Amendment culture.

Keeping your kids safe and enjoying the pleasures of hunting and shooting – to say nothing of self-defense – are not mutually exclusive. With just a little forethought, you can ensure that your kids are safe without having to sacrifice one of your most treasured American rights.
